UK Trailer Registration Plate

UK trailer registration plates are the white number plates that show a trailer's own DVLA registration number, one letter followed by seven numbers, rather than the registration of the car towing it. We make them to the DVLA's INF291 specification: solid black characters on a white reflective BS AU 145e plate, in the two-line layout the DVLA requires, made in County Durham by a DVLA-registered number plate supplier. You need one to tow a registered trailer, caravan or horsebox through most of Europe.

How it is made

The registration is printed in Charles Wright characters at the prescribed size and spacing, in a single shade of black, flat into the face of a white reflective plate that meets BS AU 145e; it is a printed plate, not a raised one. The plate carries our supplier name, postcode and the standard mark. The format is one letter and seven numbers on two lines, for example A123 on the first line and 4567 on the second, exactly as the DVLA issues it.

Is it road legal?

Yes, when the finished plate meets BS AU 145e and INF291: the correct font, size and spacing, a single shade of black, no tint or pattern, a reflective white face and the supplier mark. When you need one

You must register a trailer and display its own registration plate if you tow it to or through most European countries and it weighs over 750kg, for commercial or personal use. Ireland, Cyprus, Malta and Spain are excluded. The trailer registration plate is separate from the yellow trailer number plate, which repeats the towing vehicle's registration and stays on the trailer as before. Registration is done online with the DVLA, and the plate is made once you have the registration document.

Where to mount it

Mount the trailer registration plate as far as practicable from the number plate position. If there is no space on the rear of the trailer, mount two trailer registration plates, one on either side. Fit with sticky pads or the screw fixing kit; the fitting guide shows both.

Care

Wash by hand or with a pressure washer at a sensible distance. Do not use solvents or abrasive polish on the reflective face. Our post on cleaning your new number plates applies to this plate as well.

Warranty

36 months against manufacturing defects, which covers the plate and the print. It does not cover damage from fitting, impact or chemicals.

One plate per trailer, or two if the rear has no room and you are mounting one on each side.
