How to Find the Perfect Private Registration

Start with what you want the plate to say, not with the plate. Nearly everyone who struggles to find a registration started by browsing, and browsing 74 million registrations without a term in mind is how you end up buying nothing. Decide on the handful of words, initials or numbers that mean something to you first, then search for those.

Start with the words

The combinations people actually keep tend to come from a short list: a first name or surname, initials, a nickname, a business name, a birth year, or something the owner is known for. Write down five or six candidates before you search anything. A registration you have to explain is rarely the one you keep.

It helps to write them the way a plate would: letters and numbers stand in for each other, so a name can survive with a 5 for an S or a 1 for an I. Reading your list aloud is the quickest test of whether a substitution works or just looks like a typo.

Use the search properly

Searching a name three or four ways will turn up combinations that a single exact search never shows you.

Work through your list one term at a time rather than searching everything at once, and keep the ones that read well even if they are above what you wanted to spend. Tiers move, and a shortlist is more useful than a single favourite that turns out to be unavailable.

Match the plate to the car

A registration reads differently on different vehicles. A short combination suits a car that carries a small plate well, and a longer one can look right on something larger where a short plate would sit lost in the middle of the bumper. If you run a front plate, a shortened plate at the front with a standard one at the rear is a common pairing.

The style matters as much as the size. A subtle 3D gel finish suits a car whose lines are doing the talking; 4D laser cut suits one that is meant to be noticed. You can put your own registration into the plate builder and see any style before you order.

Check your vehicle can legally take it

One rule narrows the list before price does: a registration can never make a vehicle appear newer than it is. An older registration can go on a newer car, but not the other way round, so the age of your vehicle rules some combinations out before you get attached to them.
