Number Plates in Newcastle

Everyone who comes to us from Newcastle drives, because the plates go straight onto the car before they leave. The workshop is at Dragonville Industrial Park in Durham, signposted from Junction 62 of the A1(M), and parking outside is free, which is rarely true of anywhere in the city centre.

We are open 9:00am to 4:30pm, Monday to Saturday, and you do not need an appointment.

Ordering ahead is the quickest way

Place the order online, choose collection, and the plates can be made and fitted within an hour of the order, during opening hours, with fitting Monday to Friday. The alternative is delivery, where your documents go in the post and the plates come back a few days later.

Walking in unannounced is just as welcome. Bring a document proving your name and address and one proving your entitlement to the registration, usually a driving licence and a V5C logbook, and a pair of plates takes about ten minutes once we have seen them.

Fitting

We fit plates as well as make them, £9.99 each or £19.98 the pair, Monday to Friday, while you wait. Sticky pads are the recommendation, with screws, plate holders and velcro also available. We will fit road legal plates bought elsewhere, but never illegal ones, and the fitting guide explains how to do it yourself if you would rather.

What we make

Nine letter styles, all built to the British Standard, BS AU 145e, and none of them show plates or tinted plates:

Any of them can carry a legal flag: Union Flag, St George's Cross, Saltire, Welsh Dragon or the Green Flash EV identifier, and all of it is road legal. Shapes cover standard, shortened, hex, square 4x4, oversize for larger vehicles, trailer, motorbike and Japanese import.

Private registrations and 4D plates

Over 74 million DVLA registrations are searchable, along with 60,000+ pre-owned registrations, in dateless, prefix, suffix and current style. Seeing 4D laser cut characters in daylight before ordering is the main reason people make the trip rather than buying online.

What legal actually means

It comes down to details: the supplier name, postcode and BS AU number on the plate, Charles Wright characters, and reflective BS AU 145e backing. That is what we make, and show plates and tinted plates are not on offer.

The DVLA end of it

Assignment happens with the DVLA, through a service open 7am to 7pm every day, and it asks for the V5C plus the V750 Certificate of Entitlement or V778 Retention Document, with the vehicle taxed and MOT'd. The Done-For-You Paperwork Service takes it off your hands from a photograph of the V5C.

3D gel or 4D?

It is the question we get asked most across the counter, and the two finishes look quite different in daylight. The comparison guide sets out how they are built and how they wear.

Cost

A printed pair starts at £29.99 and the raised finishes cost more; fitting is £9.99 per plate. Buying a registration is separate and starts at £250 including the £80 DVLA fee, with tiers above that set by demand for the combination.
